A carrier that appears only when a journey begins leaves little time for familiarisation. Bringing it into everyday life gives you an opportunity to check its condition and let your cat explore without the pressure of an immediate departure.

Start with the equipment

Choose a secure, well-ventilated carrier of suitable size. Check the door, catches and handle before use. Cats Protection advises allowing cats to become familiar with the carrier at home, with comfortable familiar bedding inside.

Keep the carrier somewhere stable and accessible. If it has a removable top, follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than improvising a fastening.

Let exploration happen gradually

Initially, leave the carrier available with the entrance open. Avoid pushing your cat inside simply to complete a practice session. Make brief notes about what they are comfortable with, such as approaching the doorway or resting nearby.

Progress should follow the individual cat. If you need help preparing a particularly fearful cat, ask your veterinary practice for advice before a journey is due.

Separate practice from travel planning

Familiarisation does not replace checking the journey itself. Confirm the appointment time, route and any instructions from the practice. For transport, keep the cat contained in the secured carrier and follow appropriate vehicle-safety guidance.

  • Check that catches close correctly.
  • Keep clean spare bedding ready.
  • Have the practice’s number accessible.
  • Ask in advance about any special needs.

Never delay urgent veterinary care while trying to complete carrier training. Tell the practice about handling difficulties so they can advise you. For routine appointments, a little preparation can remove several last-minute tasks from an already busy morning.
