A pet-friendly home begins with how it works. Think about the routes people and animals take through each room and the small tasks you repeat every day.
Walk through from floor level
Look for loose cables, accessible cleaning products and small objects that should be stored away. Review plants and household products with an appropriate animal-safety source before bringing them into a pet’s space. If you suspect poisoning, contact a veterinarian immediately.
Make a short list for each room rather than trying to change the whole house at once. Start with the area your pet uses most.
Organise the daily essentials
Keep cleaning supplies, leads and other equipment in predictable places. Store items safely and separately from food. A labelled box can help everyone in the household find what they need.
Write down anything that visitors or pet sitters need to know, such as a door that must remain closed. Clear instructions are easier to follow than an improvised explanation as you leave.
Respect quiet space
Notice which areas are busiest and which are calm. Plan a comfortable place where your animal can rest without being repeatedly disturbed. In a home with several pets, think about how each animal can access what they need.
Review one room each week
Take a photograph for your own planning, make one practical improvement and check whether it helps. Your home will change as your pets age or your household routines change. Keep the setup flexible.
