You do not need a complicated app to organise pet care. A notebook, a printed sheet or a shared document can hold the information your household reaches for most often.

Create a useful first page

Start with your pet’s name, the contact details for your usual veterinary practice and the nearest suitable emergency service. Add a trusted person who can help if you are unavailable. Check phone numbers directly with the provider rather than relying on an old search result.

Keep personal details and medical records private. Share the notebook only with people who need it to care for your animal.

Record instructions without guessing

Write down the feeding or care instructions your vet has given you, together with the date. Keep the original paperwork. If something is unclear, ask the practice to clarify it instead of filling in the gaps from memory.

A care record is a place to organise information, not to create a treatment plan. Do not change medication or dosage based on a checklist.

Leave room for everyday observations

A few dated notes about routines and changes can help you explain what you have noticed. Use plain descriptions: what happened, when it happened and how often. Bring concerns to your vet rather than using notes to diagnose a problem yourself.

Make it easy to hand over

Put the most frequently used information at the front. If someone else looks after your pet, walk through the instructions with them and check that they know where supplies are kept.

Review the notebook when your circumstances change. The best system is the one that remains short, accurate and easy for the right people to find.
