Our OP from today’s Reddit AITA story is going through a pretty tough breakup. This situation is quite a headache already and it was made even more difficult by the fact that they co-owned a pet. OP ended up turning to Reddit to figure out if he was in the wrong after his long term relationship with girlfriend Shelby ended dramatically. He also came seeking advice over their cat’s custody. The young man and his girlfriend Shelby had been in a relationship spanning eight uninterrupted years and began dating in high school. Unfortunately, the relationship had to end because of a fundamental conflict of beliefs that both parties had previously agreed upon until Shelby abruptly changed course. Here’s the whole story for you to enjoy:
#1) Is OP in the wrong for this? Let’s find out.
#2) OP recently ended his 8 year relationship due to his girlfriend changing her mind about having kids.
#3) Figuring out the logistics of splitting their items has been really hard.
#4) OP’s girlfriend was moving back in with her parents. The two had a cat together who was Shelby’s idea at first but became OP’s responsibility.
#5) OP hadn’t discussed the cat by then but OP wanted it because her parents house was full of animals and was disgusting due to it.
#6) OP’s girlfriend got upset and became accusatory towards OP for wanting the cat.
#7) She agreed, but left teary eyed. Is OP being fair?
#8) OP chose the best solution in this scenario.
#9) Logically speaking, it’s best for the cat if it stays with OP.
#10) The cat would have many problems settling down if it were to be thrust into a home with so many animals.
#11) OP is being more generous than any of us would be.
#12) Hoping OP and his ex-girlfriend will be okay.
#13) She might feel better if she could visit.
#14) Very much is.
#15) OP is just being a good cat dad.
#16) OP is not in the wrong at all.
#17) Protecting Felix should be the top priority.
#18) Proud of OP, NGL.
#19) Another take on this situation.
#20) I don’t agree with this. People change. What she wanted 8 years ago isn’t what she wants now and that’s okay.
